In September 2023, a consortium of companies led by Liquidtek won the tender called by the Aguas del Valle de México Basin Agency (CONAGUA) for the “Maintenance and Rehabilitation of the Los Berros Water Treatment Plant,” located in the Cutzamala System in the State of Mexico. This system is the main water supply source for Mexico City and includes the largest water treatment plant in Latin America, with a capacity of 19,000 liters per second.

The Importance of the Los Berros Water Treatment Plant

In operation since the early 1990s, the Los Berros Plant is located near Toluca and has been crucial for providing potable water to the region. Due to its age, it has required ongoing maintenance and rehabilitation in recent years, becoming a key asset in Mexico’s water infrastructure.

Liquidtek Diversifies Its Market

As part of its expansion strategy, Liquidtek has decided to enter the maintenance and rehabilitation sector for water treatment plants and wastewater treatment facilities. To tackle this first project, the company partnered with Latinoamericana Agua y Medio Ambiente and AWASA, two companies with extensive experience in fieldwork and equipment supply.

Scope of the Rehabilitation Project

The rehabilitation project of the Los Berros Plant covers several key areas:

  • Sand filters: Extraction and replacement of sand.
  • Sedimentation tanks: Installation of plastic modules and rehabilitation of fiberglass channels.
  • Valves and electric actuators: Supply and installation of large-diameter valves and electric actuators.
  • High-capacity pumps: Supply and installation of pumping equipment.
Challenges of the Project
The project presents several significant challenges:
  1. Immediate start: Fieldwork began in October 2023, requiring the swift mobilization of personnel, mobile offices, and materials.
  2. Tight deadlines: All equipment and materials had to be on-site before December 2023, demanding an efficient procurement process.
  3. Completion by 2024: Fieldwork is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2024, with the project anticipated to finish before the second quarter.
Impact of the Project on Water Supply

The critical water supply situation in Mexico City has complicated obtaining permits to temporarily stop certain plant equipment for maintenance work. Despite these challenges, the project is expected to be completed within the established timeframe, contributing to improving the reliability of the water supply system..

Liquidtek: A Promising Future in Water Infrastructure

This project marks a milestone for Liquidtek, solidifying its position as a key player in the water infrastructure sector. Through this and future projects, the company aims to provide innovative solutions to address the challenges of potable water supply and wastewater treatment in Mexico.
